Thoughtful Gift-Giving Goes Green

April 4th, 2009

Wishwrap announces the launch of its new line of eco-friendly gift wrapping just in time for Mother’s Day. Wishwrap’s characteristic wrapping, coined ‘Wishwrapping’, is one of the key features that gives purchases made at Wishwrap a unique edge over other Internet-based shopping sites. Customers can select any one of 27 wishes to convey with each gift. Wishes like love, laughter, optimism, and joy are expressed through custom greeting cards and tags complete with definitions and personalization. Now, every gift is also delivered in reusable packaging made from sustainable materials and post-consumer recycled content – at no cost to the customer.

The new packaging is made from jute, a plant fiber that is 100% biodegradable and recyclable and can be disposed without causing environmental harm. The plant from which it is derived is grown sustainably over a small footprint relative to other plant materials such as bamboo. Packaging materials such as the greeting card and tissue are made from post-consumer recycled paper. “We want to limit our carbon footprint as much as possible, and offering smarter packaging is one way we’re making a big impact” explains Founder Manisha Kothari.

In addition to being made from sustainable materials, the packaging is particularly eco-friendly because it is designed for practical reusability. “By putting thoughtfulness into the design, we can make gifts look great, but we can also ensure that the packaging will get used over and over again, long after the gift has been unwrapped” says Kothari. The boxes are foldable so that they don’t take up a lot of room - it’s a practical solution for the customer to store, but it is also more energy-efficient and economical to ship items that take up less space. All bags have reinforced handles and can be reused as shopping totes. They each come with a practical front pocket as well. Wishwrap’s new bags and boxes come in a fun lime and chocolate color palette.
